As a leader of your company or team, you are responsible for the big picture of your departments as well as conveying the company vision, strategic planning and a host of team performance development. However, if your days are filled dealing with urgent issues, putting out multiple fires, having discussions that get bogged down in details and tackling the never ending to do list, you’re not able to tackle “leader” tasks.
The downside to this “reality” is that we tend to go straight to the weeds when we’re feeling pressured and overwhelmed. What are weeds? Being in the weeds is when you are bogged down by the details that you lose sight of the big picture. When meetings don’t achieve the desired decisions/outcomes or you do not get through all the intended items due to spending too much time on one or more topics.
The key to getting out of the weeds is first identifying you are in them and second acknowledging the steps to get out of them:
• Are you focusing too much on the execution of the details?
Taking Action: Empower your team to handle the details and update you on a mutually agreed time.
• Are you exchanging multiple emails on one subject?
Taking Action: Pick up the phone or walk into the person office to be resolve the issue or determine an appropriate action plan.
• Are you faced with a “Because that’s how it’s always be done” mind-set?
Taking Action: Have your team come to the table with two solutions to every problem. As a leader, be open that there may be a better way
• Are you involved with every decision making process in your organization?
Taking Action: Understanding your team’s strengths allows you to delegate and get an overview of the process. Pick items that are critical and allow your team to handle the rest.
Yes you are going to get in the weeds, and yes, you can effectively get out of them. Be sure to delegate, ask more questions, and be sure you have the right people in the right jobs.
